Call Me Stevesie began as a tribute to one of my favorite films, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, but it gradually became something more personal. I wanted to create a portrait that was immediately recognizable while reimagining Steve through a simple visual concept: a world stripped of color except for his iconic tomato-red beanie and the tomato he holds.
Painting almost entirely in grayscale allowed those small touches of red to become the emotional focus of the piece. The contrast draws attention to the details that feel most symbolic, turning ordinary objects into quiet anchors of memory and identity.
For me, this painting balances humor, nostalgia, and restraint. It’s a celebration of a character whose flaws, vulnerability, and persistence are exactly what make him unforgettable.
