This piece started with a feeling I wanted to hold onto.
There’s something really specific about genuine laughter. Not posed, not filtered, just that moment where someone is fully in it. Eyes closed, face lifted, everything relaxed at once. That’s what I kept coming back to while working on this.
I approached the painting in layers of value first. Breaking everything down into light and shadow helped simplify the expression without losing it. The shapes carry most of the weight here. Each one had to feel intentional, especially around the eyes and mouth where the emotion really lives.
The yellow background came in later. I wanted something that matched the energy of the expression without overcomplicating the piece. It’s bright, but it doesn’t compete. It just holds the moment in place.
There’s a contrast I like in this one. The grayscale figure feels controlled and structured, while the emotion itself is loose and immediate. That balance is something I’m always trying to figure out. How much to refine, and how much to let happen.
This piece feels lighter than some of my others. Not in the work, but in the result. It’s less about tension and more about release.
At the end of it, this one is just about that moment. The kind you don’t think about while it’s happening, but you recognize instantly when you see it again.
