Study in Expression

This piece started with a face.

Not just the structure of it, but the expression. That slight tension in the eyes, the way the mouth pulls downward, something between confusion and reaction. It felt specific, but also open enough to interpret.

I approached this one more like a study. Breaking the face down into shapes, values, and contrast. Working mostly in grayscale let me focus on form without getting distracted by color. Every shadow had to carry its weight. Every highlight had to feel intentional.

The background came later. I wanted something that would push the figure forward without competing with it. The purple felt right. It’s flat, but not empty. It holds the figure in place while still giving it space.

There’s also a quiet humor in this piece. Not loud or exaggerated, just sitting there in the expression. It’s the kind of moment you recognize instantly but can’t always explain.

I kept the edges clean and the shapes defined. There’s a balance I try to find between control and looseness. This one leans a little more controlled. More deliberate.

At the end of it, this piece feels like a snapshot of a reaction. A pause. A look that says more than words would.
