The Empty Night

Book Cover Design for De Novo Press Publishing

This cover began with a simple idea: capturing the feeling of stillness and scale that comes with looking out into a night sky that feels both vast and quiet.

For The Empty Night, I wanted to create a visual that felt immersive but restrained. The composition centers on contrast. The brightness of the stars and typography sits against a deep, expansive sky, while the silhouette of the landscape grounds the piece and gives it a sense of place. The moon rising just above the tree line acts as a focal point, creating a moment that feels suspended in time.

The typography is direct and intentional. I chose a bold, clean type treatment to anchor the image and ensure clarity, allowing the environment behind it to carry the emotional weight. I’m interested in that balance between graphic design and atmosphere, where text and image support each other without competing.

This piece reflects my interest in creating work that feels both minimal and detailed at the same time. From a distance, it reads simply. Up close, there are layers of texture, light, and depth that begin to reveal themselves.

Working on this cover reminded me how powerful restraint can be. Not every space needs to be filled. Sometimes the absence of detail is what allows a piece to breathe and gives the viewer room to step into it.

Like much of my work, this piece became a focused moment of attention. A study in contrast, atmosphere, and the quiet tension between emptiness and presence.
